According to recent research published by the security firm Sophos, there is a 50 percent chance that an unpatched and unprotected PC will be infected with malicious software in less than fifteen minutes of connecting to the Internet. Yet, a number of people unpack new personal computers from their shipping cartons, and plug them right into an Internet-connected network or broadband modem.
